Living and Working in the Region

The people…  The business resources…  The low crime rate and cost of living…  The easy access to metropolitan areas…  The leisure time choices…  The recreational opportunities…  The natural beauty…

No matter how you stack it … The Alleghenies of Pennsylvania is a good place live and work.

The Alleghenies is a place of quiet towns, picturesque covered bridges, and historic sites dating back to when this area was the final frontier of America.

Stretching across Pennsylvania for more than 4,600 square miles, The Alleghenies is a region of rich history, remarkable scenery and abundant wildlife.  Hikers, cyclists, fishermen, birders and boaters can find virtually endless adventure among ancient mountains, rushing streams, sparkling lakes and countless miles of trails and roadways.

Locomotives were made in Altoona.  Steel was made in Johnstown.  Coal was mined throughout the region.  Mills and mines recruited immigrants who contributed new pieces to the region’s cultural patchwork. The region’s heritage includes a lively, colorful culture that has inspired a crowded calendar of festivals and fairs.

Museums and historical centers tell fascinating stories of how people lived and met challenges here. Three symphony orchestras bring classical music to a variety of venues, from beautifully restored theaters to stadiums. Three fine-arts museums offer outstanding permanent collections and temporary exhibits.

For sports, there’s the Altoona Curve, a double-A farm team of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Thanks to the movie “Slapshot,” Johnstown is famous for hockey, hosting the East Coast Hockey League “Chiefs.” The International Tour d’Toona stage-cycling race winds through The Alleghenies each summer.  And, many of the golfing world’s best amateurs compete each year at Johnstown’s Sunnyhanna Country Club, one of dozens of beautiful and challenging courses in the region.

People relocate to The Alleghenies or invest in second homes here for two main reasons:  (1) You can get away from everything you want to avoid, but…  (2) You are close to everything you really need.

From The Alleghenies, you can reach half the U.S. population in less than a single day’s drive.  And three regional airports offer commuter connections to Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington and Detroit.

Year after year, the region has one of the lowest crime rates in the nation.

The region also has a low-cost of living.  Property values are genuine values, and housing choices range from stately urban neighborhoods to cozy country communities.

Land is abundant and utility-ready at dozens of industrial and business parks.  Many include Keystone Opportunity Zones, which offer years of relief from a variety of state and local taxes. Business centers, incubators and technical centers are strategically placed and offer support services and high-speed data transmission capabilities.

Our products go everywhere in the world!  World-famous bicycle-maker Cannondale, hydraulic lift equipment leader JLG Industries, North America’s largest Pepsi-Cola beverage-manufacturing site, and one of the continent’s largest powdered-metal producers maintain their market shares from The Alleghenies.

From University Park and Altoona, Penn State provides facilities for the community and resources for businesses. In addition to Penn State, St. Francis University, Juniata College, the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, Mount Aloysius College, and several community colleges educate our residents and provide a talent pool for employers.
